Storylines to Watch

Boston Crusaders

Catching fire: Arguably the season's biggest breakout corps to date, the Boston Crusaders have continued to turn heads on the field and on the scoresheet with their high-octane program, “Wicked Games.” In the span of one week, the Crusaders went from being just under a point behind The Cadets, to upsetting the Allentown corps Wednesday in Atlanta for the first time since 1980. Saturday in Alexandria, Boston's color guard also finished ahead of Carolina Crown's, while the corps as a whole came within two points of Crown for the first time since 2006.

Keeping pace: While Blue Devils B still remains undefeated on the season, the corps' lead over the Vanguard Cadets continues to fluctuate. In the span of three days, the Devils' advantage went from three tenths on Friday to 1.35 points on Saturday, before falling back to just over a half a point on Sunday. The music caption — as seen on Sunday in Bellflower, California — has been the strength for Vanguard Cadets as they look to keep pace with Blue Devils B.

Right on their tails: The Colts have quietly created an interesting race with The Academy, coming within half-a-point of the 2016 finalist in their two weekend meetings in DeKalb, Illinois, and Dubuque, Iowa. The Colts' biggest strength on the judges' sheets has been in the visual caption, where they most recently held an advantage of 0.65 points over their Arizona opponents. The last time the Dubuque, Iowa-based corps topped The Academy was in 2015, as their gap was never any smaller than two points in any of last year's head-to-head meetings.

‘Star Crossed' rivals: A heated race since day one of the 2017 DCI Tour, the Blue Stars and Crossmen continue to stay neck-and-neck through eight meetings this season. While the Blue Stars have won seven total meetings with their Texas foes — including each of the last six — neither corps has led by more than a point, as the Blue Stars currently hold an average margin of victory of 0.37 points. While the corps from La Crosse, Wisconsin this weekend controlled slim leads in overall visual and music, Crossmen continues to hold a slight advantage in the general effect caption.

Rocky Mountain high: Saturday in Denver, in the first meeting between last year's gold and silver medalists, Blue Devils found themselves ahead of the Bluecoats by an advantage of 1.15 points. While the Concord corps also won its first two meetings in 2016 with the eventual World Champion, they never led by more than a point. In Saturday's event, the Blue Devils led by slim margins in every caption but percussion, with their biggest lead held in general effect. The Devils also became the first corps to reach 85 points this season in Denver.

Onward and upward: Continuing to see steady improvement from 2016, Music City's most recent score of 62.850 from Saturday's event in Woodstock is more than four-and-a-half points above where the corps sat at the same time last season. The Nashville-based corps also continues to keep a consistent lead over Legends — a corps that swept all 10 meetings with Music City in 2016 — most recently holding a season-high advantage of 2.3 points in Woodstock, Georgia.

Back in the game: After nearly two weeks off, Gold proved itself to be in contention for a strong Open Class finish, scoring above 60 points in both of its weekend events. The corps bested Golden Empire by more than three points on both occasions, after the Bakersfield-based corps outscored Gold at the beginning of the month in Pasadena.

Closing up shop: Several Open Class corps wrapped up their 2017 tours out west this weekend, but not before a few of them made some impressive statements on the score sheets. In Denver, The Battalion's score of 59.300 marked a nearly 10-point improvement from the second-year corps' finish in 2016. Golden Empire also raised its bar, ending its 2017 campaign with a 59.700, more than four points above its closing score a year ago. Watchmen, Incognito, Blue Devils C and the Columbians also completed their seasons this weekend.

Open for business: The last two corps to step off their 2017 summer tours will hit the field for the first time this week, as Houston, Texas' Guardians make their debut on July 20 in Denton, Texas, and Canada's Les Stentors perform for the first time on July 17 in Powhatan, Virginia.
