From a Santa Clara Vanguard press release:
Each year, the Santa Clara Vanguard Booster Club makes available, up to $10,000 in scholastic scholarships, to be awarded to members in good standing who have been part of our Drum and Bugle corps program for at least two years. This program has been in existence for over 15 years and has awarded more than $150,000 to outstanding youth to aid in their continuing education.
Requirements for application are two years in the program, scholastic achievement based on school transcripts, good standing in our program by upholding all responsibilities, and an essay on a topic chosen by the scholarship committee. They must also be enrolled as a full time student with a minimum of 12 units.
Recipients of 2003 scholarship awards are:
Lindsay Cordes, who is attending the University of California at Davis. Lindsay began her drum corps activity as a member of the Vanguard Cadets where she spent two seasons. She has been a member of the Vanguard trumpet line for the past two seasons.
Mike Eng, who is attending California Polytechnic at San Luis Obispo. Mike has spent the past three years as a member of the Vanguard trumpet section.
Samantha Krohn, who is attending California University at Hayward. Samantha spent two years as a member of the Vanguard Cadets and the past four years as a member of the Vanguard mellophone section.
Mathew Nixt, who is attending UCLA. Mathew has spent the last four years as a member of the Vanguard contra/tuba section.
Lauren White, who is attending Northern Arizona University. Lauren has spent the last two years as a member of the Vanguard Cadet baritone section.
Julian Flores, who is attending Stanford University. Julian is also the recipient of this year’s Fred Sanford Scholarship. He has spent three years in the Vanguard Cadets percussion section and last year moved into the Vanguard bass drum section. Julian is currently in Santiago, Chile, enrolled in Stanford University’s overseas program, where he’s studying International Relations and Spanish, and continuing his coursework in photograph and film studies.
