More than 17,000 people around the country flocked to their local Regal, United Artists or Edwards Cinema on April 21 to check out the 2005 DCI Classic Countdown, a cinecast that featured the top 12 DCI performances as voted on by drum corps fans in an online poll. Check out a photo gallery.
"We had over 17,000 in attendance throughout the United States, which nearly matches the number of attendees at the 2004 Quarterfinals cinecast," said DCI executive director Dan Acheson. The success sets the stage for future DCI cinecasts, including 2005 quarterfinals, which will be aired at approximately 80 Regal, United Artists or Edwards Cinemas on Thursday, Aug. 11. Stay tuned to DCI.org for more details about that event. Summing up the feelings of many drum corps aficionados, Mark Bertram, a
Phantom Regiment member from 1986 to 1990 (and a Regiment staff member in 1996) who viewed the Classic Countdown in Kennesaw, Ga., said, "Everyone had a blast!" Christopher "Paco" Campos, who saw the cinecast in Ft. Worth, Texas, said the Classic Countdown satiated an off-season thirst for drum corps fans. "Thanks so much for this "off-season" entertainment for us nuts that can't get enough," Campos said. Current drum corps members had a great time at the Classic Countdown as well. Jessika Filler, a member of the Seattle Cascades who viewed the cinecast in Dublin, Calif., said, "The theater we were in was absolutely packed, and it really felt like we were watching a drum corps show! Everyone was screaming, applauding, laughing, cheering, it was so much fun! There were corps jackets everywhere!" Filler said. Katie Cutler, a former member of the Vanguard Cadets, attended the Countdown cinecast in Dublin, Calif., with current Blue Devils back field drum major Brandyn Bettencourt. "We really enjoyed the show!" Cutler said.
