Robin Wofford and Tracey Morris, who are promoting both the Atlanta Brass Classic (June 23) and Thunder at the Mountain in Kennesaw, Ga. (July 23), are truly a drum corps couple, having known each other since 1982 (although they didn't marry until 13 years later!). In 1982, Wofford was a staff member of the Memphis Blues Brass Band * (the only corps with an asterisk in its name). He had been a drum major with the same corps. At that same time, Tracey Morris was in her fourth year as a guard member with Memphis rival Spirit of Atlanta. "I was helping out with souvies with Memphis, and Tracey would come around and talk to me at the shows where Memphis and Spirit were both in," said Wofford. "I had a crush on her, but I don't think she ever knew it." Fast-forward ten years to 1992. Wofford is touring with Southwind (then based in Montgomery, Ala.). He bumps into Morris at DCI South in Nashville. They exchange polite hellos and go their separate ways. Three years later, out of the blue, Morris stumbles onto Wofford's personal profile on AOL. She e-mails him, asking if he remembers her. Seven months they are married. "Can you believe a simple crush can last that long?" asks Wofford. To add to the confusion, Wofford had been on staff with Southwind with David Starnes. Starnes is the band director at Kennesaw Mountain High School in Georgia, where Morris' daughters (now Wofford's stepdaughters) march in that same band. This summer, Wofford and Morris are hosting not one, but two drum corps shows at Kennesaw Mountain High School -- The Atlanta Brass Classic (to benefit Spirit from JSU) and Thunder at the Mountain (to benefit the Kennesaw Mountain High School Band). Ironically enough, CorpsVets (a senior corps), founded by Morris and Wofford, will be performing at the Atlanta Brass Classic.
