MURFREESBORO, Tennessee — To borrow a lyric from the Bluecoats’ 2026 repertoire: “God only knows” where things will land at the DCI World Championships this August. But after another impressive victory at Friday night’s DCI Middle Tennessee event, the Canton, Ohio corps clearly has mid-season momentum on its side.
Bluecoats topped a lineup of seven World Class corps at the event presented by DeMoulin Bros. & Co., which returned to the friendly confines of Middle Tennessee State University on Friday, July 24 after a year away in Nashville in 2025.
Off the competitive tour since last Saturday’s win in San Antonio, the corps’ score of 94.300 marks a 1.25-point improvement in less than a week and just a tenth off their 2025 first-place finish in Nashville.
Debuting a revised ending to their “Gravity & Grace” production on Friday night, Bluecoats’ undefeated streak sits at 10 events since kicking off their 2026 tour in California earlier this July.
“It’s been a few days since we’ve had a competitive show and to be in front of an audience,” Bluecoats drum major Tony Gamez said. “The crowd tonight was live and loud … Everything just seemed so in line, and everything just fit together really nicely.”

While the Bluecoats swept every caption en route to their DCI Southwestern title last weekend, Carolina Crown and the Boston Crusaders each managed to pry one away in Murfreesboro, topping the ‘Coats in Brass and Percussion, respectively. However, the Ohio corps still managed to capture first place in overall Music, backed by a three-tenths advantage in Music Analysis.
So far this season, the Blue Devils and Boston Crusaders have been neck and neck. However, head-to-head matchups between the two corps have been rare — occurring only twice during last week’s Texas tour — including a razor-thin margin of just 0.063 separating the two in San Antonio, with Boston holding the slight edge. That margin vanished entirely in Murfreesboro, with the two rivals from opposite coasts tying for second place at 92.300.
Blue Devils held a noticeable 0.55 advantage in General Effect, but Boston countered with a tenth-and-a-half advantage in overall Visual and four tenths advantage in overall Music to keep things in check.
“That’s the best one we’ve ever had,” Boston Crusaders drum major Amari Lewis said immediately after performing. “Sometimes I question if it’s going to get any better, and then this corps blows me away every single time.”
Finishing fourth, Carolina Crown remains firmly in the mix after finishing just a single tenth out of second place on Friday night. After a tightly packed Saturday in San Antonio where top contenders were separated by mere fractions of a point, the South Carolina corps showed steady progress in Murfreesboro as they eye a return to the World Championship medalist podium for the first time since taking bronze in 2023.
Highlights on the scoresheets for Crown included a second-place finish in Color Guard, a tenth ahead of the Blue Devils, and first place in Brass, a tenth in front of the Bluecoats.
The Murfreesboro venue also offered the perfect backdrop for the corps to debut changes to the end of its production.
“We put on a new crown drill set, which was incredible,” drum major Carter Block said. “Putting that on and feeling the crowd’s energy was incredible.”

The Colts continued an impressive push as they look to secure a Top 12 finalist spot in Indianapolis — one they’ve claimed every year since 2022. On Friday night, the Iowa corps came close to breaking the 85-point threshold for the first time this season, propelled by strong marks in the Visual and General Effect captions.
Spirit of Atlanta continues to time its late-season surge at just the right moment, finishing with a tally of 82.750. Celebrating its golden 50th anniversary season in 2026, the corps remains in the thick of the hunt for one of the Saturday night finalist spots in Indy. Coming off a tight 13th-place finish at the DCI Southwestern Championship in San Antonio — where just over a half a point separated 12th through 14th — Spirit showed in Murfreesboro that they are ready, willing and able to turn that late-season surge into a Finals appearance.

Performing in front of an enthusiastic hometown crowd on Friday night, Nashville’s Music City put up a 78.900. That score marks a solid one-point jump from their performance in St. Louis on Tuesday, as well as a noticeable year-over-year improvement at the DCI Middle Tennessee event.
“I am so excited to be in front of my friends and family here,” Music City drum major Hailey Westfall said.
All seven of Murfreesboro’s performing corps will depart Tennessee for Saturday night’s DCI Southeastern Championship presented by Ultimate Drill Book in Atlanta. The event will be webcast live via FloMarching on July 25 beginning at 4 p.m. CT/5 p.m. ET.
