Santa Clara Vanguard

Crowded at the top: With Santa Clara Vanguard's upset of the Bluecoats in Minneapolis on Saturday, it became clearer than ever that 2017's race to the top will be a nail-biter. Vanguard has also finished within 1.05 points of the Blue Devils in each of its last three meetings with the Concord corps. Meanwhile, Carolina Crown spent its weekend on the East Coast picking up a score of 81.900, which along with the same from the Blue Devils, stands as the season's top score to date. This coming Saturday in Denver will be the first time this season that fans get to see the Devils and Bluecoats face off.

Separating from the Open Class pack: The defending Open Class World Champion Blue Devils B — which also finished in a record-high 15th place at the 2016 DCI World Championship Semifinals — has already begun to build a sizable gap between itself and the rest of the Open Class field, consistently holding leads of around two points over its perennial rival Vanguard Cadets.

A clearer picture in the Twin Cities: The tight pack of corps currently positioned in the latter half of the top 12 — including the likes of Phantom Regiment, Blue Stars, Crossmen and Madison Scouts — gained a bit of placement clarity in Minneapolis on Saturday, as Phantom gained a 1.525-point lead ahead of the group. The Scouts also finished more than two points behind the Crossmen, who continue to be locked in right behind the Blue Stars.

A chance to make history: As Mandarins continues to separate itself from The Academy and Pacific Crest out west, the corps' overall scores have shown signs of a potentially historic opportunity. Currently, in terms of this week's average score, the Mandarins hold a lead of less than one tenth over the Madison Scouts for 12th place. Mandarins' first meeting with the men from Madison won't be until Thursday, July 20 in Belton, Texas, but the Sacramento corps has certainly put itself in a position for a run at its first appearance among the top-12 corps who advance to the DCI World Championship Finals.

Music City poised to a make a move: Perhaps lost in the surprise finish atop the World Class standings this weekend in Minneapolis, was the razor-thin margin keeping Music City above Legends on Sunday in Wisconsin; just one tenth of a point. Two nights prior the two corps had been separated by nearly two points, and last season, Legends not only swept every meeting with its Tennessee rival, but also held an average margin of victory of more than three points for the entire season.

Crossing milestones: Amidst the intriguing competition of this past weekend, several corps broke the 80- and 75-point barriers. With Santa Clara Vanguard and Bluecoats each scoring just over 80 in Minnesota on Saturday, Carolina Crown and Blue Devils followed suit later in the night, each scoring 81.900. The Cavaliers fell just shy of an 80, scoring 79.860 in Orlando, but broke 75 early in the week along with The Cadets, followed by Boston Crusaders on Saturday in Orlando. Phantom Regiment became the final corps of the week to reach its latest milestone, earning a 75.700 in Madison on Sunday, while the Blue Knights came very close with a 74.900 on Saturday in Washington.

On the starting line: With just four Open Class corps left to step off their 2017 tours, two of them — Southwind and Louisiana Stars — will debut their 2017 productions this week in Millbrook, Alabama, on July 14.
