Kimberly Kinden, 21 West Chester University Jersey Surf, 5 years Color Guard 1. Choose a corps that performs shows/music that you would want to be a part of. Pick somewhere you want to go. You're not going to enjoy your summer if you don't like the way the drum corps performs. 2. Don't be afraid to try something new. Get out of your comfort zone. At the audition you are going to be introduced to a lot of new techniques. However unfamiliar, don't be afraid to just go for it. 3. It's not as scary as you think it might be. Joining a drum corps may sound like it's really hard and scary, but it's really not. It can be hard physically, but as long as you do what you're told by staff members and have fun in the process, drum corps can be one of the best decisions of your life. 4. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you don't understand. I know that sometimes in new settings it's hard to ask questions because you're afraid of looking dumb. Ask it. Know there is probably at least one other person in the room who has the same question. 5. Don't stress and have fun! The whole point of joining a drum corps is to have fun performing for an audience. The drum corps experience is hard and challenging and that can sometimes get to people. When stressed they'll start to say things like, "I hate this," or "This is pointless, why am I here." Even after five years of doing this it happens to me too. But then I remember the reason I do it. We do this activity because we love music, performing, and having the opportunity to do it in front of thousands of people. Drum corps is supposed to be fun!
