Drum Corps International (DCI) today announced a partnership with MakeMusic, creators of SmartMusic, the interactive music software. Under the terms of the agreement, MakeMusic will be a Tour Level sponsor of the 2012 DCI Summer Tour and the 2012 DCI World Championships.

"This is a unique sponsorship as MakeMusic is also providing us with SmartMusic technology that will be integral to the success of DCI programs," said Daniel Acheson, executive director and CEO of DCI. "The ability of students to prepare and perfect music before they come together to rehearse and perform is part of the huge advantage SmartMusic offers, and this will be a critical component of programs like 'INpact Indiana's Future – Band.' Gone are the days of simply sending students sheet music and hoping for the best."

This August, the INpact project will bring together 1,000 Indiana band students to form the country's largest middle school ensemble. Students across Indiana will use SmartMusic to practice a piece of music in preparation for a once-in-a-lifetime performance at the DCI World Championships in Indianapolis.

In addition to providing the SmartMusic technology, MakeMusic will exhibit at the DCI World Championships and at additional Premier Events including those that feature DCI's educational "Kick Start Your Fall Band Season" workshops led by motivational speaker Fran Kick. MakeMusic will also have an ongoing presence in DCI media including web pages, magazines and yearbooks.

"This partnership is a great marriage," said Karen van Lith, MakeMusic CEO. "DCI will get great performances from better-prepared musicians while MakeMusic gains a platform to showcase SmartMusic's power in the important trend of distance learning."
