Genesis takes Texas pride on the road to Indy

After recent performances in San Antonio and Dallas, Austin-based Genesis left its home state and began working its way toward the East Coast.

“Texas has honestly been great,” said Genesis drum major Ariella Calili. “We have a lot of people who really love our corps and who know about us in the community. We’ll stay at these different schools, and we have stands full of people. Everyone comes out and supports us; the local communities love us.”

Whether it be through providing places to stay, rehearse, or perform, the local communities that have backed Genesis throughout the 2025 season, Calili expressed high gratitude for this support, and feels as though the corps is a part of every community that helps it along the way.

“It’s really nice to be able to be in a local community where people know who you are, and they can come out and support you, and we can have family from all over the state come out and see us,” Calili said.

Genesis has performed at 10 events so far this season, and five of those appearances were in Texas.

The corps’ 2025 production, “Kaleidoscope Heart,” centers around the many different emotions within a person. These sorts of “colors,” while unique, are present in every person, and the corps portrays that idea through music and visuals that change during its show.

“The different colors appear, the different styles of music change, and sort of show the different Kaleidoscope effect of people and of drum corps,” Calili said. “As us and the corps and our community, we just love the idea of being able to showcase who we are through all those different kinds of music.”

Additionally, the repertoire includes well-known pieces centered around imagination, including “My Favorite Things” from the film, “The Sound of Music,” as well as “Pure Imagination,” from the ever-popular childhood classic, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”

“It’s all about music that everyone loves,” said corps director Edward F. Gobbel. “It’s all about music that people are going to walk away singing, music that people can recognize that our performers are just going to love to perform.”

Prior to the DCI World Championships, August 7-9 in Indianapolis, Genesis will make its way up along the East Coast as it prepares for World Championships Week.
