Greg Sparrow, mayor of DeKalb, Ill. (site of THE Midwest Championships on July 11 and 12) officially proclaimed those two days as “Drum Corps Midwest Championship Days” at a ceremony this morning. The proclamation reads in part, “Therefore I, Greg Sparrow, Mayor of the city of DeKalb, do hereby proclaim July 11 and July 12, 2003, as “Drum Corps Midwest Championship Days” and encourage the citizens of DeKalb to join in acknowledging the Drum Corps Midwest Championship, the parent organization of Drum Corps International, and the DeKalb sponsoring organizations: the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, the Daily Chronicle, FunMe Events and Northern Illinois University.” The proclamation also said that drum corps events have “become one of the premier tourist attractions for audiences attending from 25 states and Canada.”
