One of the most inspired corps alumni events anywhere is the annual Madison Scouts "Rockin' for a Cure," now in its fifth year. This gathering not only brings together corps alumni, current members and corps fans and other supporters for a great time of music and camaraderie, the event is a benefit for ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease). In 1999, former corps member and Scouts instructor Steve Weekes was stricken with ALS. He founded the first of the corps benefits on behalf of ALS research. Sadly, Steve passed away this past January, and the corps is dedicated to making this event the largest and most productive ever in order to pay homage to the Steve's life and to further his goal of finding a cure for the disease. How wonderful it is to not only bring together current and former members and supporters of the Madison Scouts, but to also raise money for such a worthwhile organization. ALL proceeds go to the ALS Therapy Development Foundation. This year's event will be held April 23 at 6 pm at the Coliseum Bar, 232 Olin Avenue in Madison. Tickets are only $15 and there will be a cash bar, lots of food and a giant silent auction of lots corps stuff donated by many corps. Commemorative T-shirts are also available for purchase. In addition, three jazz and R&B groups will provide music all evening. Wall of Sound is a cover band made up of many Scouts alumni, performing songs from Earth, Wind and Fire, Tower of Power, and Blood, Sweat and Tears. The Soul Brothers is a cover band of Scouts alumni that performs songs from the movie "The Blues Brothers." All That Jazz is a steaming, 22-piece big band jazz ensemble well known in the upper Midwest. But wait, there's more! The 2005 Madison Scouts horn line and corps alumni will be singing "You'll Never Walk Alone" and the 40-horn Chicago Royal-Airs mini corps will be playing "God Bless the Child" and other tunes from their 2005 repertoire, focusing on vintage corps tunes from the 1960s and 1970s.
