From a Magic press release: The Magic is reporting a great start to a new season after completing the second of two very successful audition camps. In addition to an excellent turnout by member hopefuls, January's camp was notable because of its location: the Florida Elks Youth Camp. The youth camp is situated on 385 secluded acres near Umatilla, Fla., and features state-of-the-art facilities, such as gyms, lodges, athletic fields, etc. Magic's executive director Bruce Ziegler is pleased with the location. "This place is drum corps Paradise!" he said. "Magic has at its disposal a state-of-the-art gym, nearly 10 acres of athletic fields, a field house and, best of all, nine-person cabins. I don't think there are many corps sleeping in beds on camp weekends!" Ziegler plans to use the facility for all future camps. "We look forward to a long association with the Florida Elks Youth Camp. This is definitely a right fit partnership as the Elks host many other youth organizations such as colleges, schools, churches, Boy and Girl Scout camps and other non-profits." Attendance at both audition camps has exceeded staff expectations. "We've got so many very talented, hard working kids here!" stated program administrator Mike Longo. "The turnout was so good that we've decided to expand the horn line this season." Longo is also very happy with the corps progress. "We continued work the ballad from Moulin Rouge, "One Day I'll Fly Away." Later, we jumped right into the opener, entitled "Joy." Key Poulan has created a very challenging and powerful variant on Bach's "JESU, Joy of Man's Desiring." The members worked very hard all weekend and by Sunday afternoon the staff and members were grinning from ear to ear!" Magic's next camp will be from Feb. 24-26, at the Florida Elks Youth Camp near Umatilla. According to Ziegler, horn line positions are still open. "Anyone who is still considering auditioning should definitely get out here next camp -- it's not too late!" The February camp will also feature a Magic alumni reunion on Sunday, Feb. 26. All Magic alumni are invited and urged to attend. Further details may be found on the Magic Web site.
