Only one day remains until THE Midwest Championships on July 11 and July 12 in Dekalb, Ill. DCI Hall of Famer Gene Monterastelli, a legendary former judge and instructor, remembers, "One of the most exciting shows I ever judged was the Drum Corps Midwest Championship in 1982 -- the Madison Scouts and Phantom Regiment tied. Rather than accepting the tie, the two corps competed again. It was each corps' third performance of the day (back then the prelims were also on Saturday), so neither turned in the most polished of shows. But certainly for both corps, it was an emotional and exciting performance." And for those drum corps fans slaving away in downtown Chicago until later on Friday night, you can STILL see Division I corps in DeKalb that night -- the Kiwanis Kavaliers, Carolina Crown , Crossmen , The Cadets and Boston Crusaders don't step off until 10 p.m.
