On a winning streak since last Friday in Allentown, Pennsylvania, the Bluecoats stormed into Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium besting a field of 35 other World and Open Class corps at the DCI World Championship Prelims pres. by GPG Music.
When viewing the recap, there are two General Effect judges for each GE 1 and GE 2, the scores of the pair of GE 1 judges averaged and added to the score for the averaged pair of GE 2 judges. The overall Visual score is comprised of judges’ scores for Visual Proficiency, Visual Analysis, and Color Guard. The overall Music score is comprised of scores from four judges; one for Brass, two for Music Analysis that are averaged together, and one for Percussion.

Bluecoats (1st-97.650) took 1st in GE and Music Analysis, 2nd in Visual Proficiency, Visual Analysis, and Brass, and 4th in Color Guard and Percussion. Despite that Percussion placement, the corps finished only 0.1 under Blue Devils’ 2nd-place Percussion caption, accounting for only 0.05 of the total score. The 0.35 advantage over Devils in GE was more than offset by a 0.425 deficit to BD in total Visual, meaning the combination of GE and total Visual gave Blue Devils a scant advantage of just 0.075 between those two total captions. So it was a mere 0.175 advantage in total Music that kept the corps just 0.10 over Blue Devils in total score.
Blue Devils (2nd-97.550) won all three Visual captions by 0.425 over Bluecoats, took 2nd in GE by finishing 0.35 under Bluecoats, placed 2nd in Percussion, 3rd in Brass, and 4th in Music Analysis, finishing 0.175 under Bluecoats in total Music.
Santa Clara Vanguard (3rd-96.238) won Percussion, took 3rd in GE, Visual Proficiency, Color Guard, and Music Analysis, and placed 4th in Visual Analysis and Brass.
Carolina Crown (4th-95.938) won Music overall by taking first in Brass and 2nd in Music Analysis. The corps took 3rd in Visual Analysis and Percussion, 4th in GE and Visual Proficiency, and 6th in Color Guard, nudging Vanguard by 0.1 in total Music, but slipping to SCV by by 0.20 in both GE and total Visual.
The Cavaliers (5th place-94.250 with a 0.30 penalty) placed 6th in Visual Proficiency and 5th in all six of the remaining captions.
Boston Crusaders (6th place-94.225) took 2nd in Color Guard, 0.10 under Blue Devils, 7th in Percussion, 5th in Visual Analysis, and 6th in the other four captions. The 0.35 deficit to Cavaliers in total Music was the difference between 5th and 6th place, due to a small spread in each of the three Music captions.
Blue Knights (7th place-91.475) was 7th in GE, Visual Proficiency, Brass, and Music Analysis, and 8th in the remaining three captions.
Blue Stars (8th place-90.850) ended 7th in Visual Analysis and Color Guard, 10th in Brass and Visual Proficiency, and 8th or 9th in all else.
The Cadets (9th place-90.100) finished 6th in Percussion, 10th in Color Guard, and 9th or 10th in other captions.
Mandarins (10th place-88.850) ended 8th in Visual Proficiency and Brass, 9th in Color Guard, 13th in Percussion, and 10th or 11th in remaining captions.
Phantom Regiment (11th place-87.375) took 10th in Visual Analysis and Percussion, 13th in Brass, and 11th or 12th in everything else.
Crossmen (12th place-87.163) placed 11th or 12th in all captions.
Spirit of Atlanta (13th place-85.250) finished 11th in Brass, 16th in Percussion, and 13th through 15th in remaining captions.
Pacific Crest (14th place-83.925) captured 13th in Color Guard, 17th in Percussion, and 14th through 16th in the other captions.
The Academy (15th place-83.900) was 13th in Visual Analysis, 18th in Percussion, and 14th through 16th in all else.
Colts (16th place-83.825) finished 12th in Percussion and 14th through 16th in the remaining captions.
Madison Scouts (17th place-81.025) took 15th in Percussion, 17th in GE, 21st in Visual Analysis, and 18th or 19th in all else.
Troopers (18th place-80.850) took 14th in Percussion, 17th in Visual Analysis, Brass, and Music Analysis, but slipped to 23rd in Visual Proficiency. GE placed 18th and Color Guard 20th.
Spartans (19th place-80.400) was 17th in Visual Proficiency and Color Guard, and 18th or 19th in all else.
Genesis (20th place-78.163) finished 22nd in Visual Proficiency and Visual Analysis and 20th or 21st in the remaining captions.
Legends (21st place-78.075) was 19th through 24th in all captions.
Gold (22nd place-76.775) was 19th in Color Guard and 20th in Visual Proficiency, but 26th in Visual Analysis. Other captions were 23rd or 24th.
Music City (23rd place-76.588) took 20th in both Analysis captions and 22nd through 24th in all remaining captions.
Jersey Surf (24th place-76.413) finished 19th in Visual Analysis and 22nd to 25th in everything else.
Seattle Cascades (25th place-73.700) made it into Semifinals by 0.10 over Louisiana Stars. Stars had a 0.35 advantage in total Visual, finishing 9 places ahead in Visual Proficiency, but since Cascades finished 6 places ahead in Visual Analysis the total Visual caption wasn’t a deciding factor. Stars was also ahead by only 0.075 in total Music, so it was Cascades’ 0.525 advantage over Stars in GE that effectively called the show for Cascades and prevented Louisiana Stars from appearing in the corps’ first-ever World Championships Semifinals.
The following corps will not be advancing into Friday’s Semifinals show.
Louisiana Stars (26th place-73.600) was 21st in Visual Proficiency, 29th in Visual Analysis, 23rd in Percussion, and 25th through 27th in the other captions.
Southwind (27th place-72.363) was 24th in Visual Analysis, 29th in Color Guard, and 26th through 28th in the remaining captions.
River City Rhythm (28th place-71.075) had caption placements ranging from 27th through 30th place, except for 32nd in Percussion.
Guardians (29th place-70.975) was 27th in Percussion, 28th in Visual Analysis and Color Guard and 29th or 30th in all else.
7th Regiment (30th place-70.475) finished 30th in GE despite placing 27th from two of the four GE judges. 28th in Brass was the corps’ highlight with Percussion finishing in 31st.
Golden Empire (31st place-68.475) was 27th in Color Guard and 30th through 32nd in the rest of the captions.
Shadow (32nd place-66.300) was 29th in Percussion, 35th in Visual Analysis, and between 31st and 33rd in the remaining captions.
Colt Cadets (33rd place-64.425) was 34th in Color Guard and 33rd in everything else.
Les Stentors (34th place-63.150) placed 32nd in total Visual on the basis of being 32nd in Visual Analysis and Color Guard. The corps was 34th through 36th in the remaining captions.
Raiders (35th place-62.450) finished 34rd or 35th in all captions.
Heat Wave (36th place-60.050) was 35th or 36th in all captions.
