by Michael Boo

The record audiences for 2017's events at Lucas Oil Stadium witnessed Blue Devils (1st-98.538) win its 18th DCI World Championship title to cap off an undefeated season. The corps swept all four General Effect judges, winning Total Effect by slightly over half a point, and won all three Visual captions; Proficiency, Analysis, and Color Guard, also winning Total Visual by about the same margin as General Effect. While Blue Devils took 2nd in Brass and Percussion and placed 3rd in Music Analysis, the corps scored less than 0.20 behind Santa Clara Vanguard in Total Music.

Santa Clara Vanguard
(2nd-97.600) won Percussion by just 0.137. The bulk of the corps' deficit to the Devils came from finishing 3rd in Visual Analysis and Brass, scoring 0.525 under Blue Devils in Total General Effect and 0.55 under Blue Devils in Total Visual. Those overall captions accounted for more than the total spread between Vanguard and 2017's World Champion.

Carolina Crown (3rd-96.575) was 3rd in Total General Effect and Total Visual, and 2nd in Total Music. Most noticeable was 6th place in Color Guard, 4th in Percussion, and 1st in Brass and Music Analysis.

The Cavaliers (4th-95.200) was 5th in Total General Effect, Visual Proficiency, Brass, and Music Analysis. While taking 3rd in Percussion to Bluecoats' 5th, the corps placed under Bluecoats in both Brass and Music Analysis and barely lost to Bluecoats in Total Music by a microscopic 0.013. The corps finished 0.15 over Bluecoats in Total Visual by placing 4th in Visual Analysis and Color Guard. Being that the overall advantage over Bluecoats was a scant 0.037, the 0.15 advantage in Total Visual, as small as it may seem, was significant to the Cavaliers moving ahead of the Ohio corps for the first time all season and the first time since 2013.

Bluecoats (5th-95.163) was 4th in Total GE, 0.10 over The Cavaliers. Total Visual placed 5th and Total Music was 4th with that tiny spread over Cavaliers. Boston Crusaders (6th-92.963) earned 3rd in Color Guard, but still placed 6th in Total Visual due to 6th and 7th in Proficiency and Analysis, respectively. 6th in Total GE and 6th in Total Music (with 7th place in Percussion), allowed Crusaders to score over a point above The Cadets by earning higher marks in all overall captions.

The Cadets (7th-91.675) were 8th in Brass and Percussion, also finishing 8th in Total Music. 7th in Total General Effect and Total Visual sealed the loss to the Crusaders. Blue Knights (8th-90.400) was 6th in Percussion raising their Total Music score to 7th. Total General Effect and Total Visual placed 8th. Phantom Regiment (9th-88.125) was 9th in Total GE and Total Music, and 10th in Total Visual.

Blue Stars (10th-87.938) took 8th in Color Guard to bring up their Total Visual placement to 9th, allowing the corps to score 0.225 over Phantom Regiment in Total Visual. Total GE and Total Music finished 10th. Crossmen (11th-86.825) was 9th in Music Analysis and 11th in all other captions. Madison Scouts (12th-85.250) finished 12th across all captions.
