Recap Roundup: DCI World Championship Semifinals

The small one-point spread between the 1st and 3rd place corps at the 2017 Drum Corps International World Championship Prelims in Indianapolis grew to 1.525 points in the Semifinals. The 0.363 spread between the top two corps grew slightly to 0.413. The order remained the same, with Blue Devils maintaining the corps' perfect season, and Santa Clara Vanguard still in the run for the title.

While the spread between Vanguard and Carolina Crown increased from 0.637 in Prelims to 1.375 in Semifinals, the spread between Carolina Crown and 4th place Bluecoats decreased from 1.725 points to 1.375. There were no placement changes among the top 13 corps.

Blue Devils (1^st-98.113) won Total General Effect as well as Total Visual, despite placing 2^nd in Proficiency and Color Guard to Santa Clara Vanguard. Each of those spreads was 0.20, but it was the 0.70 advantage the Devils had over Vanguard in Visual Analysis (in which SCV placed 3^rd) that tipped the scales in Total Visual. All three Music captions placed 2^nd by very close margins to the respective 1^st place lines, which were Carolina Crown in Brass and Analysis and SCV in Percussion.

Santa Clara Vanguard (2^nd-97.700) was 2^nd in Total General Effect by 0.20, 1^st in Total Visual by winning Proficiency and Color Guard, and 3^rd in Total Music after placing 3^rd in the two captions other than Percussion. Carolina Crown (3^rd-96.588) was 3^rd in Total General Effect, 3^rd in Total Visual — despite placing 4^th in Proficiency and 5^th in Color Guard — and 2^nd in Total Music by placing 1^st in Brass and Analysis and 4^th in Percussion.

Bluecoats (4^th-95.203) finished 4^th in Total General Effect, 5^th in Total Visual due to placing 3^rd in Proficiency, 5^th in Analysis, and 6^th in Color Guard, and 5^th in Total Music due to placing 4^th in Brass and Analysis and 5^th in Percussion. The Cavaliers (5^th-94.925) captured 3^rd in Percussion, but 5^th in the other two Music captions, 5^th in Total General Effect, and 4^th in Total Visual by taking 4^th in Analysis and Color Guard, which lifted the corps' 5^th-place finish in Proficiency.

Boston Crusaders (6^th-93.400) placed 3^rd in Color Guard, just as in Prelims. The only other caption that didn't place in 6^th was a 7^th-place finish in Visual Analysis. The Cadets (7^th-91.738) were slightly hurt by a 9^th place finish in Brass, just as in Prelims. General Effect fell from 6^th to 7^th while the three Visual captions averaged out to 7^th, as did the three Music captions.

Blue Knights (8^th-91.013) was 8^th in Total General Effect, Total Visual, and Total Music, with caption finishes between 7^th in Brass and Music Analysis and 10^th in Color Guard. Phantom Regiment (9^th-89.888) was 8^th in Brass, 9^th in Percussion, 11^th in Visual Proficiency and Music Analysis, and 9^th in everything else.

Blue Stars (10^th-88.975) opened up its spread over Crossmen by placing 7^th in Color Guard and between 9^th and 11^th in all other captions. Crossmen (11^th-88.488) was 9^th in Music Analysis and 10^th or 11^th in everything else. Madison Scouts (12^th-86.475) will return to the Finals after placing 13^th in Visual Proficiency, 14^th in Visual Analysis, and 12^th in the remaining captions.

Mandarins (13^th-85.550) was 13^th in Color Guard (under Madison) but 12^th in the other two Visual captions (over Madison). All other captions placed 13^th or 14^th. The Academy (14^th-84.188) traded placements with Colts from the Prelims by placing 16^th in Percussion, 13^th in the other two Music captions, and 14^th or 15^th in all other captions.

Colts (15^th-83.888) finished 13^th in Color Guard and 14^th through 16^th in the remaining captions. The corps fell to The Academy due to rather small deficits in a few captions, but nothing glaring. Vanguard Cadets (16^th-81.975) was 18^th in Brass and 19^th in Percussion, but 15^th or 16^th in the remaining captions.

Troopers (17^th-81.275) was 15^th in Percussion, but 21^st in Color Guard. All other captions placed 17^th or 18^th. Spirit of Atlanta (18^th-80.075) was 16^th in Brass, 17^th in Color Guard, and 18^th through 20^th in the remaining captions. Blue Devils B (19^th-80.050) was 17^th in Visual Analysis, 18^th in Total General Effect and Visual Proficiency, and 19^th or 20^th in everything else.

Oregon Crusaders (20^th-79.050) took 18^th in Color Guard, 21^st in Visual Analysis, and 19^th or 20^th in the other captions. Pacific Crest (21^st-78.000) was 20^th through 22^nd in all captions. Legends (22^nd-76.225) was 20^th in Color Guard, tied Genesis for 22^nd in Total General Effect, placed 22^nd in Percussion, and 23^rd in the remaining captions.

Genesis (23^rd-76.213) was 21^st in Brass and 22^nd or 23^rd in all else. Music City (24^th-74.275) was 24^th or 25^th in all captions. Spartans (25^th-73.475) was 22^nd in Visual Analysis and 24^th or 25^th in everything else.
