INDIANAPOLIS — At the DCI Southwestern Championship — July 18 in San Antonio, the only meeting of all 20 World Class corps during the 2026 DCI Summer Tour — Spirit of Atlanta sat on the outside looking in. A corps that’s been on the doorstep of the Top 12 many times since its last finalist finish in 2013, Spirit sat in 14th place — close, but not there yet.
Over the weeks since then, Spirit has been on a mission.
At Friday’s DCI World Championship Semifinals, Spirit wrote its 2026 summer into the DCI history books — in golden anniversary sharpie — placing an impressive 10th overall and locking up a coveted Top 12 finalist position.
“The show was amazing. Just leading up to the warmups, you could tell that it was going to be a good show,” Spirit of Atlanta drum major Chris Dowis said. “I can definitely tell all performers left it all out on the field, so I feel really good about it.”
While Spirit averaged an 87.590 overall score in its past four competitions before Friday night, they have been building competitive fire throughout the southeast and finally overtook other finalist contenders in Pennsylvania. The corps had run into Blue Knights in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and its home show in Atlanta, but only pushed past the Denver corps at the DCI Eastern Classic in Allentown on July 31 by just 0.162.
In hindsight, that narrow victory in Allentown proved to be Spirit’s true turning point as the corps charged toward Indianapolis. For Dowis, the breakthrough was no accident; It was the inevitable payoff of weeks of rigorous preparation, signaling that a major leap was finally underway.
“It was the fire that we had when it’s been so long since we made Finals, and having a show where we can take it to the next level,” Dowis said. “I think that really motivated us to push and push and push. I can’t thank the performers enough because every single one of them pushed so hard, and I’m so proud of everybody.”
In terms of year over year improvement, the 2026 edition of Spirit earned a full 1.963 over its 2025 Semifinals showing that fell just short of the Finals cutoff. After some staff movement and additions to the performer ranks, Spirit was beyond ready to rewrite last season’s finish.
“Last year we were obviously very devastated that we were 13th. We were just barely out of Finals, but we made some changes in the offseason,” Dowis said. “I think around 400-plus horn line members auditioned this year, which was much better than previous seasons. Our hard work has really taken us to the next level.”
Now that the long journey back to Finals is complete for the Georgia corps, the corps’ members will celebrate their remarkable run with one final performance of “Golden Summer” — not only as a tribute to the competitive success of the tour, but to each other and to their storied organization that is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.
“I think there’s going to be unreal energy (in our Finals performance),” Dowis said. “I already know it would mean everything to every member in this corps because of how hard we’ve been working. We’re waiting, we need this.”
