Abbey Yacoe
Abbey Elizabeth Yacoe, 17 Vanguard Cadets 2011, Santa Clara Vanguard 2012 Trumpet 1. Don't boast — This is very embarrassing, but when I was 15 years old and auditioning for the Vanguard Cadets, I accidently made a boastful comment to my instructor about my playing, in an attempt to "trick him" into thinking I was a better player than I was. And after that I proceeded to fumble through my exhaustively prepared audition piece at five times the normal frack count. My instructor understood that I was just a teenager with a mouth too big for my body, but I wish more than anything I had kept my mouth shut and played it cool. To this day, it is my biggest regret in drum corps. 2. Take out the trashcan when it is full! — In other words; be helpful. Help unload the equipment truck when you arrive at an audition camp. Stay after camp is over to make sure everything is put away. If the garbage can is full after dinner, take it out and save the cook crew volunteers five minutes. For me, drum corps has always been about being the best possible version of yourself on and off the field. Even at an audition camp, do what you can to help out, and it will go a long way toward earning the respect of your instructors, the veteran members and yourself. 3. Don't convince yourself you're not the right "type" — I am 17. I am a girl. I am 5' 0'' tall. I am the quintessential person that disproves that drum corps are looking for a certain "type" of corps member. Don't convince yourself that you are too young, too short, or too anything. If you think you got what it takes, try for it. 4. Go running — Find a buddy (possibly someone who is also interested in auditioning for a drum corps) and start a running routine. Corps often look for three things among auditioning members: musical talent, visual proficiency and physical conditioning. Your physical health is the easiest thing to improve on before an audition, and you will be much happier and healthier once spring training begins. 5. Get Pumped! — Audition weekend can be really fun if you let it be. Music and drum corps is about having fun and enjoying the experience. Get pumped for a weekend of beautiful music and free food. Everything is going to be fine. View additional audition tips, and learn more about corps audition dates, locations, and more.
