Drum Corps International's live broadcast of the World Championship Quarterfinals isn't the only thing music fans can enjoy these days in movie theaters across the country. National Cinemedia's Fathom Events (NCM), DCI's partner for its annual World Championship and "Countdown" cinema events, has teamed up with the LA Philharmonic to bring a series of orchestral concerts to the big screen. The second in a series of three LA Phil LIVE concerts will take place on Sunday, March 13. The orchestra, under the baton of internationally acclaimed music director Gustavo Dudamel, will perform an all-Tchaikovsky program. What Fathom calls "an immersive sight and sound experience," the LA Phil movie theater event will not only feature the full-length live performance of the orchestra, but also special performances by actors Orlando Bloom, Malcolm McDowell and Matthew Rhys, behind-the-scenes interviews with LA Phil musicians, rehearsal footage, and a live post-concert Q&A interview with Dudamel.
WHAT: Actors Orlando Bloom, Malcolm McDowell and Matthew Rhys, and director Kate Burton have been confirmed to participate in the LA Phil all-Tchaikovsky program led by Music Director Gustavo Dudamel. The Sunday concert is the second LA Phil LIVE performance, and will be simulcast live in theaters across the country, at 2 p.m. Pacific/5 p.m. Eastern. The all-Tchaikovsky concert program features the composer's three Fantasy-Overtures inspired by Shakespeare plays – Hamlet, The Tempest and Romeo and Juliet. Preceding each of these powerful symphonic poems are selections from the Bard's immortal works performed by the cast of actors (Orlando Bloom as Romeo, Malcolm McDowell as Prospero, and Matthew Rhys as Hamlet). Kate Burton, the prolific Tony-nominated stage and screen actress and daughter of the late Richard Burton, directs this all-star cast and also serves as host for the LA Phil LIVE broadcast.
