Conrad Zimmer
Conrad Zimmer, 18 Pacific Crest Contra 2009-2011 What do you think is important in choosing which corps to audition for? When you are choosing a corps it is important to weigh all the factors like cost, the corps' style, and what you want out of your drum corps experience. It is important to audition for a corps that you really want to be a part of. Another important factor is where you live. Is there a local corps? Did your high school marching instructors march at a particular corps? If you liked their teaching style there, there is a high probability that you will enjoy yourself at the corps they work with. Choosing where to audition is a huge decision so take your time. Think about it carefully and an answer will come to you. How do you like to prepare for an audition? Proper preparation is important for any performance, but it is important to practice to a point where you feel comfortable and can perform the routine on demand with precision. You will be ready the second you can perform consistently at a level that you desire. What was your experience like the first time you auditioned for a corps? The first time I auditioned was when I was 15 years old. I felt like the smallest, weakest, and most unprepared out of all the other candidates. I can remember showing up at Diamond Bar High School and seeing hundreds of people. I didn't know anyone while going through the camp attempting to hold up the contra. But I made it, and I have not missed a summer of drum corps yet. What advice would you give to somebody who is nervous or unsure about auditioning? If you are unsure about auditioning you need to decide whether or not you want to be a part of a drum corps. If you do and do not think you are good enough, it will not hurt to try. Remember, nobody ever feels good enough. When you get in the audition room just relax. All you need to do is think positively, breathe and play the music. Any other tips? Be passionate and put your heart into your experience. I have always felt that what you put into something is what you will get out of it. So why not give it all you've got?
