Rick Valenzuela has joined the Phantom Regiment as director of development and special projects to its management team. Valenzuela, 37, has a long and distinguished career in the drum corps activity beginning as a member of the world-renowned Santa Clara Vanguard in 1983. As development director for Phantom Regiment, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2006, Valenzuela will be responsible for expanding the organization's donor base, growing its revenue streams and assisting with educational programs. Currently, Phantom Regiment runs a world-class drum and bugle corps, a drum major camp, a snare drum camp, a fall marching band festival and two drum corps shows. Plans are in the works for a color guard camp, a third drum corps show, a music and marching camp for high school students, and an entertainment ensemble to perform at local minor-league sports events. He also will assist corps director Patrick Seidling in planning the drum corps' summer competitive season. Valenzuela brings extensive experience to Phantom Regiment, where he'll join a management team that includes Seidling, president Tim Farrell, vice president Greg Newell, treasurer Mark Patterson and secretary and program coordinator Dan Farrell. Seidling, who has been involved in the activity for more than 30 years, is entering his fifth year as director, while the four board officers bring to the table more than 100 combined years of involvement with Phantom Regiment. As a marching member for Santa Clara Vanguard, Valenzuela earned one world championship and four runner-up finishes. He later became a member of the visual staff for many years. He was named director in November 1999 after the corps won its sixth world championship and has maintained the Vanguard's elite status in the activity, including five top-four finishes. Valenzuela was named Drum Corps International's Director of the Year in 2002. "I'm honored and thrilled to be working for an organization with a very long and rich history," said Valenzuela, who is moving from Roseville, Calif., to the Rock River Valley with his wife and two young children. "I have already met many of those heavily involved with the Regiment and have seen the sense of family and belonging with all of them. I'm looking forward to joining the Phantom Regiment family." He'll work alongside 2003 DCI Director of the Year Pat Seidling on the full-time staff. "Phantom Regiment has not only worked hard to regain its lofty competitive standing, but we've worked equally hard to develop educational programs that allow us to reach more youth than ever," said Seidling, who oversaw the corps' third-place finish in 2005. "Rick's addition to the team here will ensure that these programs continue to grow and become even more effective, while at the same time strengthening the entire fabric of this organization." Valenzuela begins his duties in Rockford on Nov. 2.
