Brian Black, 21 Tarleton State University Racine Scouts 2008-2009, Santa Clara Vanguard Baritone 2010-2011 What do you think is important in choosing which corps to audition for? One of the most important items in choosing the right corps should be based on where you've always wanted to go. I knew there were always great drum corps close to my home, but for some reason I insisted on travelling great distances just to march. Yes, the burden of travelling can be heavy, but even if you live in Maine but you've ALWAYS wanted to march a corps that's all the way on the other side of the country, you should definitely try your best to not let that stop you. How will you know what you're missing if you never try? How do you like to prepare for an audition? When I prepare for the audition I like to get in touch with the corps' staff members as soon as possible. I try to get an understanding of how they will approach rehearsals so that when I show up for the audition camp I will have a pretty good idea of what to expect. Also, get the audition music as soon as you can and start practicing! If you can find a recording of the audition piece it should give you a pretty good idea of what the staff is looking for when they want to hear you play it. What was your experience like the first time you auditioned for a corps? The first time I ever auditioned for a drum corps was for the Cavaliers in '08, and I have to say it was one of the most nerve-racking moments of my entire life! Despite that I kept my ears open and took in everything that I was told and even though I didn't make it, I still had a blast and learned a lot! What advice would you give to somebody who is nervous or unsure about auditioning? Relax! Nerves are natural in every audition and all the staff members are expecting you to be nervous. Go out there and do your best because that's exactly what they want from you. Have fun! Whether they give you a spot in the corps or not, I guarantee that you will learn a lot and you'll make some good friends! Even if you're not wanting to march this summer or do not think that you will make it, going to an audition and putting yourself out there is the best way to be prepared for when you really are ready to audition. Besides, you never know, the staff might just offer you a spot. Like I said before, how will you know what you're missing if you never try? Any other tips? Find a couple veteran members in the corps and get to know them. Ask questions because most of these guys and girls will be glad that you are there and won't mind giving you a helping hand.
