Welcome to the 2026 shoe list for the marching arts. Our yearly lists have been ongoing for more than 20 years. There is always a lot of change from year to year, but this has been a big year in the shoe industry as the addition of super cushioned shoes and stiff plate technologies have been emerging. As always, we wade through the models and brands available and try to make sense of them for you. This list is guided by our need to ensure you get on the bus in May and get off in August with as little preventable downtime as possible. Print or download the list and take it with you to find shoes. Try them on!
Whether you are a veteran or new to your ensemble, you should find this list to be a guide to getting through the summer with the most important piece of equipment you will use this summer. Your shoes connect you to the earth all day, every day. Working with shoe manufacturers and their reps has resulted in a wide selection for your daily summer shoes. When you go, plan on buying two or three pair of shoes to get from spring training through the last day of tour. Heavier instruments and performers with complex drill/choreography will benefit from a third pair throughout the course of the summer. There is not ONE BEST SHOE for everyone. Try them on. There should not be a break-in process for most modern shoes.
Running shoes: These are generally a bad choice for marching as designers develop them for running straight lines. Not much lateral stability is needed. In our world, cross trainers and trail shoes suit our needs much better. For three decades we have seen stress fractures and tendon injuries as a result of people wearing running specific shoes.
Cushioning: Anyone going into a shoe store lately has seen the rise of super-cushioned shoes. This is good to a degree and certainly insulates the foot better on hot field turf, but there is a degree of instability and problems associated with over-cushioning the foot. We avoided many models as they will create more potential for injuries/sprains. Forefoot cushioning is considered as “spending time on your platform” which is a consideration for choreographers and drill techs.
Insoles: We have used Spenco Polysorb Cross Trainers and Orthotics with great success for many years. Other brands are adequate, but Spenco has been our preferred insole.
Consistent performers: New Balance 608, Nike Air Monarch and several Asics models have been reliable and steady performers at a good price for decades. They are marked on the lists. Value does not mean “cheap” but for the short summer season a couple pairs of these have been really good at a price point that most can afford a couple of pairs. Use the list, try them on, find ones that fit your foot and use them for a fabulous summer experience.
Socks: We say “cotton is dead” and have moved to bamboo or polypropylene moisture-wicking socks. These avoid a lot of problems with athletes’ foot, warts and ingrown nails by wicking moisture away from the foot. All major brands have a line of moisture-wicking socks. Apolla has a set of injury prevention socks we have come to know and love.
