The DCI Southwestern Championship this weekend in San Antonio, Texas will be the first time this season all 20 World Class corps meet up and go head-to-head. San Antonio is also the first event of the season in multiple parts, in this case, an afternoon preliminary contest followed by an evening finals performance. Here’s an explanation of how the order of performance for San Antonio, and other events yet to come this season, is chosen. San Antonio, Texas (DCI Southwestern Championship) The top eight scoring corps from the Orlando and Denver events this past weekend were automatically seeded into the finals in San Antonio. Those corps, in order of descending scores from Saturday, were the Blue Devils, Cavaliers, Carolina Crown, Cadets, Phantom Regiment, Santa Clara Vanguard, Bluecoats and Boston Crusaders. Performance order for San Antonio was then drawn at random from this ranking in groups of three (and a group of two for the 7th and 8th ranked corps.)
The remaining twelve corps will compete in the afternoon competition to qualify for the four remaining spots at the evening show. Their placement order for the afternoon contest is again determined by scores at DCI Orlando and Denver’s “Drums Along the Rockies,” in random draws from groups of 3. The three corps that did not compete at either event (The Academy, Pacific Crest, and Pioneer) used scores from the nearest date before those events and participated in the random draw based off of those numbers. Revolution, the one Open Class corps at the DCI Southwestern Championship, will open the show. Murfreesboro, Tenn. (Pearl Presents the Masters of the Summer Music Games) Results from San Antonio will determine which corps compete at the Murfreesboro, Tenn. “Pearl Presents the Masters of the Summer Music Games.” Murfreesboro will showcase the top 8 corps by score in San Antonio and they will appear in reverse order of placement. Atlanta, Ga. (DCI Southeastern Championship) The top eight corps from San Antonio, who also perform in Murfreesboro, will be seeded into the finals at Atlanta. The rest of DCI’s World Class will compete in the prelims, and performance order for all corps will be randomized in groups of 3 like it was in San Antonio. Allentown, Penn. (DCI Eastern Classic) Historic J. Birney Crum Stadium will once again host the historic DCI Eastern Classic, and although the event will be divided over two nights order of appearance will be arranged as if the contest were a single night, using the results from Atlanta and randomized draws in groups of 3. Bloomington, Ind. (DCI World Championship Quarterfinals) Quarterfinals in Bloomington, Ind. will have their lineup determined by the averages of scores from Orlando and Denver, San Antonio, Atlanta, and Allentown. There will be no random draw for Quarterfinals, so corps will appear in reverse order of the average.
