What to Watch For

Tight at the Top: With one regional down, the race at the top of the standings is about as close as can be. While the 2.775-point distance between first and fifth place in St. Louis was certainly unprecedented, the 0.225 that separated the first-place Blue Devils and second-place Bluecoats was one of the closest across the board. This Tuesday in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, both corps will meet up with Santa Clara Vanguard, as the race for first continues to unfold heading into Texas.

Vanguard Cadets keep it rolling: After quickly overcoming a three-point deficit to Blue Devils B, the Vanguard Cadets have taken a commanding lead over the past several days. The Santa Clara corps has won its last three meetings with Blue Devils B, each by more than the last, most notably winning by 1.6 points Sunday in Norwalk. So far, the general effect caption has been a major strength for Vanguard Cadets.

Open Class heats up down south: Guardians, Louisiana Stars and Southwind exploded out of the gates this week, kicking off their 2018 tours with five head-to-head-to-head meetings in as many days. The Guardians won three of those five matchups, with Louisiana Stars taking the other two. Southwind only finished higher than third place once this week, but never finished more than 2.1 points from the top.

The BattalionThe Battalion

Records on the line out west:
The Battalion and Columbians both shined this week. While the Columbians' season wrapped up Thursday in Ogden, Utah, the corps set an all-time individual record by posting a score of 57.950. The Battalion has come close to breaking its own record of 59.100 on multiple occasions and will have four more chances to do so in the week ahead.

Mandarins make an early trip east: The Sacramento corps made its way to the midwest earlier than it normally does, giving it a chance to see the likes of Blue Stars and Crossmen prior to its appearance at the St. Louis regional event. After starting the week with a strong lead over Blue Stars in Sioux City, Iowa, Mandarins found themselves just about a point off of the Wisconsin corps and Phantom Regiment in St. Louis. The Mandarins have held a consistent lead over the Crossmen; the two were separated by 1.625 points Sunday night.

Scouts sneak ahead: After dropping three consecutive contests to Colts last week, the Madison Scouts bounced back Friday night in DeKalb, Illinois, ousting the Dubuque, Iowa corps by just over a point. While its newfound lead nearly vanished in St. Louis, the Madison corps held on by just 0.025 thanks to an edge in general effect.
