How did you choose your corps?
Being from Michigan, a former teacher of mine, Josh Peeples (Teal snare tech), brought to my attention that Teal Sound was looking for cymbal players and that I should audition.
What was the experience like the first time you auditioned for a corps?
Since this wasn't the first time I'd ever tried out for a drum corps, I was somewhat familiar with how most corps go through the audition process. My audition experience was excellent when I first auditioned at Teal Sound. The percussion staff was great in giving feedback and also provided information on what I needed to work on.
In your opinion, what's the best way to prepare for an audition?
Come prepared knowing the audition material. It helps the staff understand what you are capable of doing. Coming into an audition with a positive attitude helps a lot as well. It keeps your spirits up throughout the process.
What would you say to someone who is unsure whether or not to audition for a drum corps?
From the very first time I auditioned for a drum corps when I was 17, I've always been told that it's better to come audition for a corps than to not. At least it gives you the opportunity to see where your skill level is. You may be surprised to find out that you are capable of being a part of a corps.
Any other advice?
Go audition for the corps even if you don't think it'll work out. I found out a couple months before the summer tour began that I was going to fill a spot at a drum corps.
Also, when going to the auditions, always try be the person who volunteers to go first or demonstrate something. That shows the staff you are confident with your skills and as a result they'll start thinking about you from the beginning of the audition process.
