9. Blue Devils continue streak Friday night in Allentown

With a top score of just over 96 points, the Blue Devils continued their undefeated 2022 campaign in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Friday, August 5.

With its Friday result, Blue Devils significantly increased the corps’ lead over Boston Crusaders; the two were most recently separated by 0.175 points July 30 in Atlanta. Blue Devils took top scores in all captions except color guard, which went the way of Boston Crusaders by a tenth and a half.

Hosted at a new venue in 2022, Center Parc Credit Union Stadium, the DCI Southeastern Championship generated a lot of competitive buzz with less than two tenths separating the top-two corps.

Blue Devils earned top scores the majority of its advantage in the general effect caption, while also earning first place overall in visual proficiency and visual analysis. Boston Crusaders — which has held serve for the past week in second place since first earning its top-two standing July 23 in San Antonio — made up significant ground finishing just 0.175 behind.

6. Surf snags last Semis spot, Troopers take 12th at Thursday Prelims

Jersey Surf and Troopers both made competitive waves on the first night of competition in Indianapolis after 35 corps faced off during the DCI World Championship Prelims at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Jersey Surf earned the final spot amongst the Top 25 to advance to Friday’s DCI World Championship Semifinals, marking its second-consecutive appearance at the annual Friday event. Troopers also posted a late scoring surge, moving from the corps’ pre-show seeding of 14th place to a 12th-place finish at Thursday’s event, positioning the corps to vie for its first finalist berth since 2009 and second in the past 30 years.

5. RANKINGS: World Class scores pull into focus entering August

With the end of the summer of 2022 on the horizon, DCI.org took a snapshot of the World Class rankings as they stood on the first day of August, based on comparative head-to-head results at recent DCI Tour events.

4. Carolina Crown takes day two in Allentown as World Championships loom in Indy

Carolina Crown nearly made a clean sweep of the judging captions after 11 World Class corps faced off at J. Birney Crum Stadium on the second night of the DCI Eastern Classic in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

The Fort Mill, South Carolina corps — which has spent most of the 2022 DCI Tour amongst the top-three scorers — earned the second-highest overall score across two days of Allentown events. Amongst Saturday’s lineup, Crown topped the scoresheets in all captions except percussion.

3. Blue Devils one-up past record season in front of near-record San Antonio crowd

Blue Devils emerged atop a 19-corps leaderboard as drum corps returned to the San Antonio Alamodome for the biggest event of DCI's 50th anniversary season to date.

In front of a crowd of 14,697 — just over 100 shy of the record set in 2017 — Blue Devils emerged atop the 19-corps leaderboard. The Concord, California corps continued its undefeated season with a top score of 92.175, which eclipses its San Antonio output from its 2014 all-time record-holding competitive season.

2. Colts, Troopers regain finalist status at historic 2022 Semifinals

At the DCI World Championship Semifinals at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Colts and Troopers both took their spot within DCI's Top 12 finalist pool for the first time in more than a decade.

For Colts, 2022 marks the Dubuque, Iowa corps’ first finalist placement since 2007. The corps’ Friday score of 87.450 was its highest of all time. Troopers earned the 12th and final spot in Saturday’s event at the tail end of a late-season scoring surge. In the most recent competitive DCI season, 2019, Troopers finished in 18th place.

Drum Corps International’s 50th anniversary season came to a resounding conclusion at Saturday’s DCI World Championship Finals, with Blue Devils scoring the organization’s 20th gold medal in front of an engaged audience of 20,705.
