Richard "Doc" Santo
Former Cadets director Richard "Doc" Santo passed away Monday evening in his hometown of Jupiter, Fla. Santo, a member of the Cadets' color guard in the 1950s, served as the 11th director of the corps from 1979 to 1982. He is often credited for laying the foundation for the Cadets' successes in the mid-1980s. Santo also is responsible for bringing in current Cadets director George Hopkins as an assistant in 1980, before he took over the full directorship of the corps in September of 1982. "I have always had a fond place in my heart for Doc. He allowed me, and a bunch of young kids to take on the Cadets' transformation back in the early '80s and I know he took a great deal of heat from past Cadets!" Hopkins said in a post on the corps' website. Read more about Santo's legacy at YEA.org. Photo courtesy YEA.org.
